Artists of the Month: The Canyons

Greetings Dawn Friends!

The richness of autumn is all around us here in our great state of Ohio. It’s a special time, with the pumpkins on the vine, crunching leaves under our feet, and a briskness in the breeze which reminds us to breathe in nature’s bounty of the harvest season. The chill in the air also reminds us of the comforts of a good book and sharing stories with one another.

Celebrating art and literature directly with children and educators especially warms our hearts, and now that a new school year is underway, it’s a delightful time for us to enjoy opportunities to visit schools and speak at educational conferences.

This fall has been exceptionally exciting with many school visits and events! Along with the opportunity to meet many new friends, we’ve also had the great pleasure of seeing many wonderful projects at the schools we have visited. We LOVE to share our art and books, but what we enjoy even more is getting a chance to see so many amazing projects created by children and teachers! Below are just a few samples of some special school projects inspired by our books and recent visits…

A joy-filled visit to Ashville Elementary School with friend and “Librarian Extraordinaire,” Patt Barr. Student artwork inspired by the book Grandma’s Feather Bed (Ashville, Ohio).

The Canyon’s featured appearance with educator friends at Miami University/Picture Perfect Science Teacher Workshop.

Student self-portraits inspired by the book Sunshine On My Shoulders greeting us at a recent visit to T.C. Knapp Elementary School (Canton, Ohio).

Jeanette with student sea creature art inspired by the book Over In The Ocean, (Benjamin Harrison Elementary/ Marion, Ohio).

Christopher with student art inspired by the book Grandma’s Feather Bed, (Benjamin Harrison Elementary/ Marion, Ohio).

Along with our busy event schedule, we have also been enjoying some time to pursue many creative projects of our own. Quite recently we had the chance to work with NOAA (the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) in creating an educational poster and materials for NOAA’s world-wide Coral Reef Conservation Program (CRCP). The CRCP contacted us for this project because they were inspired by the book Over In The Ocean: In a Coral Reef. We had a wonderful time designing and producing the poster which features polymer clay art from this special Dawn Publications book. Below is a sample of the poster. We also enjoyed working with OCEANA in providing the “swirly water” art from the book Over In The Ocean: In a Coral Reef, which was used for the decor of OCEANA’s 2010 SeaChange Summer Party. This year’s theme, “A healthy ocean is every child’s rightful inheritance”  was a star-studded Hollywood fundraising event for the great work OCEANA is doing to protect the World’s oceans.

It is such a pleasure and honor for us to work and visit with so many special people. We are deeply touched by how our books published by our wonderful friends at Dawn Publications have inspired children and grown ups to continue to appreciate our earth, each other, and all of the wonderful things we can do when we use our creativity in a positive way.
